From January 1, 2025, a zero-emission zone will apply in Amsterdam. This means that all new trucks must be zero-emission from that date. To achieve this ambition, the City of Amsterdam is committed to the transition to emission-free waste collection vehicles.
Tender 45 electric collection vehicles
Between December 2023 and April 2025, Jikke Beusink and Geert Lubbers guided the municipality in drawing up a procurement strategy and successfully executing a European tender for 45 electric collection vehicles. The first vehicles will be put into service in phases starting September 1, 2026. This milestone forms an important basis for the further sustainability of Amsterdam's waste collection.
Sustainable and safe choices
The new vehicles will be equipped with cobalt-free batteries, a conscious choice because of the environmental impact and ethical issues surrounding cobalt mining. Safety was also high on the agenda: the cars will have detection systems for cyclists, additional cameras and an extra window in the passenger door for better visibility of blind spots.
Towards emissions-free collection by 2030
The City of Amsterdam is working towards completely emission-free collection in 2030. In addition to the purchase of electric collection vehicles, the implementation of charging infrastructure, as well as the associated approach to internal and external charging, is an important prerequisite. Jikke Beusink, Geert Lubbers and Cosmas van Heck advise and guide the municipality in this process.
Structure and trust as the basis for success
Timothy Veenboer, principal and deputy manager Assets at the City of Amsterdam, looks back with satisfaction, “This first major procurement of emission-free vehicles was new territory for us. Complex choices had to be made regarding the procurement strategy and the Program of Requirements. Coppa guided us excellently in this: with their thorough approach, clear communication and focus on the end goal, they knew how to bring structure and confidence, which contributed to a successful result.”
