Chain and logistics process optimization at Schiphol Airport

Anthon van Gent and Leo Groeneveld have both been working on great projects at the international airport for many years. From innovation to optimization, from chain integration to project management and from asset management to digital transformation.

Schiphol is constantly investing in expansion and innovation, and the airport has one of the most modern baggage systems in the world. And they want to keep it that way. That is why they are looking ahead, to be prepared in time for growth, to respond to stricter environmental and privacy legislation, to be agile and to be able to respond to unexpected developments.

Optimizing baggage flows and storage

Each year, Schiphol processes some 53 million pieces of baggage. Reason enough to continuously monitor and improve the optimization of baggage flows and storage. Introducing smarter and faster processes requires creativity. The flow of passengers with their baggage must continue flawlessly.

The consultants are working on the ‘Southern Development’ project. The project in which preparations for the arrival of the new terminal is being realized, including a new baggage basement for loading and unloading baggage with a connection to the current baggage system.

South Development's first project is the Buffer South Upgrade. This project provides additional storage capacity needed to replace the end-off-life D-pier buffer system in phases, and to provide buffer capacity for the new baggage system under the new terminal.

Chain and logistics process optimization

A project never stands alone, you always have to look wider than your own project. It is incredibly important that the new processes are agile; the technology must facilitate this. In the multidisciplinary team formed, with stakeholders from all parties involved, we are developing a new piece of Schiphol together with the designing parties.
